Medium/Difficult. A good choice for advanced HS or college jazz ensembles.

Quirky swing tune written around the minor blues scale with a somewhat "hardcore" shout section. Originally premiered by the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble, and later rearranged for jazz ensemble. Swang is the first track on Tricks of Light.

Gray Monster is a rock tune of sorts- Funk rhythms and intricate solis make the tune somewhat difficult, but groovy and heavy at the same time. The sensitive theme in the keyboard is borrowed throughout and takes on a new image at the end of the arrangement. Gray Monster is recorded on Tricks of Light.

Solos are written for alto and tenor saxophone, and seperate solo changes are included for trumpet and trombone as well.

Highest note in Lead Trumpet= concert Bb6 (written C above the staff), with an optional concert Db7 on the last chord.


Medium/Difficult for typical HS ensembles, mostly because of the open solo section. Ensemble parts are not too difficult. 


Finderwimens is an original tune composed by former Tonight Show Trombonist, educator, bassist and arranger/composer Matt Finders and arranged for large jazz ensemble by Jessika Smith.

Finderwimens is a medium jazz-waltz with a lilting melody and seamless, romantic chord motion. Written piano chords and written bass lines make this chart easier for High School level ensembles.

Solo sections are written for piano and Tenor Sax 2, although the solo section can be opened up for more soloists. Lead Trumpet is featured in this tune both with written parts and short, Maynard-like, improvisatory interjections. Lead Trumpet solo parts can be removed for performance by younger ensembles- tune will still sound great.

Buddy's Blues is a character piece in the old-school big band style. Simple riffs make up the melody of the tune and the brass slap the audience around with surprisingly abrupt articulations. Simple chart that will swing hard no matter what.

Song For Ellen

This walking ballad features solo alto saxophone on the melody and an improvised solo.

Highest note in Lead Trumpet= concert C6 (can be played down an octave)

Song for Ellen is a relatively simple ballad in AABA form. Muted brass help the solo alto saxophone soar in the beginning, and bright trumpets take over on the melody before the 1 chorus improvised solo. Three short fermatas leave extra solo space in a cadenza for the alto soloist at the end of the piece.
