Originally premiered by the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble, and later rearranged for jazz ensemble. Swang is the first track on Tricks of Light.

Finderwimens is a medium jazz-waltz with a lilting melody and seamless, romantic chord motion. Written piano chords and written bass lines make this chart easier for High School level ensembles.

Finderwimens is an original tune composed by former Tonight Show Trombonist, educator, bassist and arranger/composer Matt Finders and arranged for large jazz ensemble by Jessika Smith.

Gray Monster is a rock tune of sorts- Funk rhythms and intricate solis make the tune somewhat difficult, but groovy and heavy at the same time. The sensitive theme in the keyboard is borrowed throughout and takes on a new image at the end of the arrangement.

Buddy's Blues, PDF score and parts for jazz ensemble
Buddy's Blues is a character piece in the old-school big band style. Simple riffs make up the melody of the tune and the brass slap the audience around with surprisingly abrupt articulations. Simple chart that will swing hard no matter what.

Solo sections are written for piano and Tenor Sax 2, although the solo section can be opened up for more soloists. Lead Trumpet is featured in this tune both with written parts and short, Maynard-like, improvisatory interjections. Lead Trumpet solo parts can be removed for performance by younger ensembles- tune will still sound great.

Silver Rush was originally commissioned for the 2024 Reno Jazz Festival. A fast swing tune with breaks for pentatonic and bebop language transforms into a half-time feel hip hop section, then back to fast swing. Approachable solo changes and mostly unison section solis make this a great educational tune for your jazz ensemble.
